Product Review: TuffRider Comfy Mesh Fly Sheet

And just like that it’s summer. We went from a week of cold and rainy weather to temps in the low 90’s literally overnight with no cool down in sight. With the heat has come the humidity and the bugs (mosquitos the size of birds (just kidding, not really) and flies). Although we take a stand against the flies with SimpliFly and Fly Predators, you can’t eliminate them completely. My horses hate flies and Shooter is even allergic to fly bites so when the flies come out, so do the fly sheets.

We tend to have very hot, humid summers and I hate the idea of them wearing heavy, plastic-like fly sheets and am always on the lookout for ones that are soft, breathable and comfortable. However with that combo you often sacrifice durability.

But on a whim, last summer, I ordered the TuffRider Comfy Mesh Fly Sheet and it became the winner of the summer. It was very cheap ($29) and I had very low expectations for it. But was pleasantly surprised how well made it was. The fabric was soft, silky and breathable and the fit was amazing (so many fly sheets are overly loose and fit more like you threw a bed sheet over them). It’s small holes allowed air flow but kept the flies and mosquitos from biting. It was also insanely durable and held up way better than the expensive ($150) Horseware fly sheets I have. It also provides UV protection and has smooth fabric inside across the shoulders so it doesn’t rub the hair. It also washed well and really held up the whole summer. Lesson learned, just because something is expensive doesn’t always mean it is the best.
